It’s Spring and that means the taxman has come out of hibernation

For many people in France, seeing the first almond blossom and wildflowers emerge after a long cold winter is blighted by the imminent arrival of the taxman.

Every year, the usual panic ensues.

The French administration only allows tax returns to be submitted between the beginning of April and the end of May, which means everybody is trying to find an accountant at the same time. Other than exceptional circumstances, a tax return can only be submitted online, which means finding your way around some very complex forms. On top of that, not everybody realises that submitting a tax return is a legal obligation for every resident in France, even if you have zero income. Heavy fines apply for late, non-existent or incorrect tax returns, so it’s a good idea to get it right the first time.

That’s where our finance team at French Connections HCB comes in.

From now until mid-April, you can book a FREE 30-minute tax consultation worth 90 euros with our qualified financial advisor, Simon Verity. He’ll help to make sure you don’t pay too much tax or pay it in the wrong place.

Here are some key facts to remember.

The French tax year lasts from January to December. If you obtained your Carte de Séjour in 2021, you’ll need to have completed your first tax return by the end of May 2022 even if you have nothing to declare.

In order to put in a tax return, you first need to obtain a ‘numéro fiscal’, which can be tricky if you have limited experience of the French administration.

Tax forms are always in French and there is often more than one form to complete.

As a French resident you will be taxed on your worldwide income. However, there’s a double tax treaty between France and most other countries, including the UK. The trick is to make sure you are paying your tax to the correct authority.

Booking a free 30-minute tax consultation with Simon will get the ball rolling in a timely manner. Apart from making sure you are not paying too much tax, you can also avoid a potential fine for being late with your declaration.

Simply click on the button below to choose a date and time to suit you. The consultation is FREE if booked before Friday 15th April. It will still be available if booked after that date but will cost 90 euros.

Places are always in demand, so hurry. The sooner you book yourself in, the sooner you can get back to enjoying the daffodils.
